Caps 101: Understanding the Basics of Custom Cap Building

Creating custom caps can be stressful, especially with tons of fancy lingo thrown at you. What should be an enjoyable task can quickly turn into an overwhelming experience. Learning basic cap terminology will help make the cap building process easier.

Structure vs. Unstructured Profile: Structured caps include a fused buckram front panel that gives the hat a firm fabric to embroider and a cap that holds its shape. Unstructured caps do not include any buckram backing therefore making it a very relaxed, flexible fabric.

Fabric: The most popular cap fabrics are Brushed Cotton Twill, Cotton Twill, Chino, Mesh and Garment Washed

Cotton Twill or Chino Cotton Twill: A fabric made from cotton with diagonal, parallel ridges

Brushed Cotton Twill: A special brush is applied to cotton twill fabric that breaks fibers and creates a soft feel.

Mesh: A loosely woven or knitted fabric that has a large number of closely spaced holes.

Visor: This is the brim of the hat. All caps come standard with a pre-curved sandwich visor. More dramatic looks can be achieved.

Eyelets: A small hole found on the cap that is rimmed with metal or fabric. Our most popular eyelets are brushed silver, antique brass or sewn.

Backstrap: The backstrap is used to adjust the fit of the cap. Plastic snap, fabric cloth strap, leather and fabric Velcro straps are our most popular options.

Panel: The sections of the cap sewn together with thread.
